New school year, new oral care routine: our tips for the whole family

Published on September 03, 2025

The new school year often means a fresh start: new schedules, new resolutions, new energy. It is also the perfect moment to (re)establish an effective, gentle, and lasting oral hygiene routine, for yourself and for your children!

Why? Because a good dental routine is not just about cleanliness: it is a ritual of prevention, well-being, and overall health protection.

Why revisit your oral hygiene routine at the start of the school year?

Going back to work, school, or activities often brings changes in pace… and a more irregular oral hygiene routine: brushing too quickly, eating on the go, forgetting to floss. The result: more plaque, bad breath, or sensitivity.

Starting a new routine from September onwards is the best way to get back on track, in just a few minutes a day.

1. Adopt a more mindful approach to brushing… not a more aggressive one

The reflex of 'brushing harder when I'm in a rush' is one of the most common… and most harmful. The key is not intensity, but regularity and gentleness.

At The Smilist, we recommend our ultra-soft polishing toothbrush with 10,000 bristles, perfect for thorough yet gentle brushing without damaging the enamel or gums!

Remember:

  • 2 brushings a day for 2 minutes
  • Light pressure (your bristles should never splay out)
  • Circular strokes or from the gum towards the tooth

2. Incorporate a remineralising toothpaste into your routine

After the summer, enamel can be weakened (by ice cream, fizzy drinks, stress…). The new school year is therefore the right moment to strengthen the mineral barrier of the teeth, gently.

We recommend incorporating the The Smilist Remineralising Whitening Toothpaste into your routine: ECOCERT certified, Made in France, fluoride-free, enriched with minerals and prebiotics to actively strengthen enamel and support the balance of the oral microbiome.

3. Restore balance after intense days

Stress, rushed meals, reduced salivation: the mouth suffers from the back-to-school pace too. Think about rebalancing its pH and natural defences at the end of the day.

The Smilist Purifying Biphasic Micro-Oil is a great option to consider in the evening. Alcohol-free, it combines a refreshing aqueous phase with an oil phase enriched with prebiotics. It helps purify the mouth gently, hydrates the mucous membranes, and supports the balance of the oral microbiome. A soothing gesture that perfectly completes a gentle and considerate oral care routine!

4. Adapt the oral care routine for younger children… and teenagers

The new school year is also the ideal moment to (re)motivate children and pre-teens to adopt a regular and enjoyable dental hygiene routine. At this age, independence is growing, but a little encouragement always goes a long way.

Tips:

  • Brush along to music or with a timer
  • An ergonomic, soft, and age-appropriate toothbrush
  • Small tracking rituals or symbolic encouragements

The Smilist products are perfectly suited from age 12!

5. Take your freshness with you to the office or school

The mouth can become dry or stale as the day goes on, especially with stress or rushed meals. A small, discreet gesture can make all the difference.

The Smilist Purifying Mouth Spray is a great option: alcohol-free, it hydrates the mucous membranes, freshens breath, and helps preserve the balance of the oral microbiome. Ideal after a coffee or between appointments.

In summary: the 5 pillars of a good back-to-school dental routine

  • Gentle brushing twice a day
  • A suitable remineralising toothpaste
  • A balancing mouthwash for the evening
  • An educational routine for children
  • A freshness treatment to pop in your bag

What if this new school year was the chance to establish a genuine wellness routine?

At The Smilist, we believe the mouth is far more than a place of hygiene: it is a space of balance, prevention, and gentleness. And that with the right habits and the right products, everyone can transform their dental ritual into a moment for themselves.

Take care of your smile — it goes everywhere with you.
