The Oral Microbiota
The Oral Microbiota – Our Expertise
Microbiome science lies at the heart of TheSmilist’s DNA. Research now shows that the balance of the oral microbiota influences not only dental and gum health, but also the overall balance of the body.
What is the oral microbiota?
It is the living ecosystem within the mouth, composed of billions of microorganisms — primarily bacteria — that contribute to digestion, protect against pathogens and support overall health.
This complex environment plays an essential role in maintaining both oral and systemic health.
Did you know?
Oral microbiota plays a key role in the health of your mouth - and far beyond.
1 billion bacteria per milliliter of saliva
700 different species of bacteria in the mouth
1 in 2 adults has oral microbiota imbalance often without knowing it.*

4 signs that may indicate an imbalance in the oral microbiota.
Yellow teeth
Sensitive gums
Bad breath
Dental cavities
3 risks related to this imbalance
Chronic low-grade inflammation
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease*
Links to diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and digestive disorders

The consequences of an unbalanced oral microbiota
When an imbalance occurs — known as dysbiosis — its effects can be both local and systemic.
At the oral level, this may result in bad breath, tooth discolouration, cavities, gum inflammation or periodontal disease.
Beyond the oral sphere, scientific studies have linked oral dysbiosis to chronic low-grade inflammation, associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease*, type 2 diabetes**, and correlations with Alzheimer’s disease*** and certain digestive disorders****.
Maintaining and revitalising the balance of the oral microbiota is therefore a major global health challenge.

How can I take care of my oral microbiota?
Caring for your oral microbiota means maintaining its balance while supporting its vitality.
Prebiotics nourish and stimulate beneficial bacteria naturally present in the mouth, promoting a healthy and dynamic ecosystem. At the same time, selective antibacterial active ingredients target harmful bacteria without disrupting beneficial flora.
Our dental microbiome care is built on this approach, helping to rebalance and revitalise the oral microbiota for long-lasting oral health and a positive impact on overall wellbeing.
