The key role of the oral microbiome in gum health

Published on September 17, 2025

When we talk about gum health, we immediately think of brushing, flossing, or scaling. But what we too often forget is that a balanced oral microbiome is one of the fundamental pillars of a healthy mouth — and in particular of gums that are healthy, supple, and free from inflammation.

Understanding the role of the microbiome means changing the way we look at oral hygiene: moving from a logic of elimination to an approach based on balance !

What is the oral microbiota?

The oral microbiome refers to all the micro-organisms naturally present in the mouth: bacteria, yeasts, non-pathogenic viruses… This small ecosystem lives on the teeth, tongue, gums, and mucous membranes.

Contrary to popular belief, not all of these micro-organisms should be eliminated. Beneficial bacteria play an essential protective role. They prevent pathogens from proliferating, regulate acidity, and contribute to local immune defences.

A balanced microbiome = protected gums

When the microbiome is healthy, it acts as a living barrier that:

  • Prevents the adhesion of bacteria responsible for gingivitis
  • Regulates local inflammation
  • Promotes healing of gum tissue
  • Maintains a neutral pH, which is unfavourable to pathogenic bacteria

But when an imbalance occurs (known as dysbiosis), this defence system breaks down. The result: bleeding, pain, redness, swelling… all the classic signs of gingivitis.

What disrupts the balance of the oral microbiome

Several factors can upset the oral flora:

  • The use of harsh mouthwashes containing alcohol
  • The use of conventional toothpastes that are too abrasive or contain sulphates
  • Stress, which alters the bacterial composition
  • Dry mouth, often linked to reduced saliva production
  • A diet that is too sugary or acidic
  • Certain medications or medical treatments

The key is not to eliminate everything, but to nourish the beneficial bacteria to restore a healthy and lasting balance.

How to support the microbiome to protect your gums?

1. Opt for gentle, alcohol-free care enriched with prebiotics

All The Smilist products have been designed to respect and strengthen the oral microbiome, particularly in cases of gum sensitivity.

  • The Gum Regenerating Toothpaste contains plant-based hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and prebiotics. It hydrates, soothes sensitive gums, and supports the protective bacteria.
  • The Purifying Biphasic Micro-oil is a gentle alternative to conventional mouthwashes. Alcohol-free and enriched with prebiotics and botanical oils, it purifies without aggression, hydrates the mucous membranes, and encourages a balanced oral environment.

2. Brush with care, without aggravating gum tissue

Mechanical aggression weakens the gums and disturbs the local flora. An ultra-soft brush allows effective cleaning without compromising the microbiome balance.

3. Limit acidic aggressors and favour a protective diet

Diet plays a major role in gum health. Foods rich in fibre, antioxidants, and vitamins (C, D, K2) support a healthy microbiome.

Remember to drink water regularly, chew slowly, and avoid sugary or acidic snacking.

At The Smilist, we believe that gum health begins with respecting their balance!

That is why our formulas are designed without fluoride, without alcohol, without sulphates, and enriched with prebiotics, minerals, and botanical actives. Because protecting the gums is not about aggression — it's about supporting their natural regeneration.

Look after your oral microbiome. Your gums will thank you!
