Weakened enamel in summer? Our tips against hidden sugar

Published on July 09, 2025

Summer invites us to indulge in sweet pleasures: an ice cream on the beach, a mango-passion smoothie after yoga, a fresh fruit salad on the terrace… These sun-drenched delights are wonderful for the spirit, but less kind to our tooth enamel. Yet there's no need to deprive yourself — you simply need to understand a little better, and protect a little smarter.

Natural sugar or added sugar: both are the same challenge for enamel

Whether the sugar comes from a homemade ice cream, a fresh piece of fruit, or a homemade detox juice, it still acts as fuel for oral bacteria. These bacteria produce acid as they digest sugar, which attacks the enamel and weakens your teeth over time.

And the acidity of fruits, such as lemon, pineapple, or raspberries, multiplies the erosive effect: it temporarily softens the enamel, making your teeth more vulnerable if you brush straight afterwards.

The right steps to protect your smile all summer long

1. Rinse with water after a sweet treat

After a sorbet or a smoothie, a simple glass of water or a rinse with clean water helps neutralise acidity and wash away sugary residue.

2. Wait 30 minutes before brushing

After eating or drinking something acidic, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. This allows saliva to remineralise the enamel naturally.

3. Brush gently with a kind formula

Use a toothpaste free from ultra-abrasive agents and harsh fluoride. We prefer a 100% natural toothpaste, gentle and good for your oral microbiome! We recommend those from The Smilist !

What about fruit then? Should you avoid it?

Not at all. Fruit is excellent for general health. The secret is to:

  • Enjoy it as part of a proper meal, rather than as an isolated snack,
  • Drink water afterwards,

And avoid dried or candied fruit, which are very sticky and high in concentrated sugars.

Natural protection: a gentle & holistic ritual

To keep enamel strong despite ice creams, summer juices, and fruity treats, think about incorporating remineralising treatments into your oral-care routine. The idea is to naturally support enamel remineralisation and soothe the mouth after each acidic exposure.

Our summer favourite? The Enamel Whitening Remineralising Serum :
A concentrate of minerals that strengthens enamel, balances the oral microbiome, and brightens your smile without aggression — quite the opposite!

To be applied in the evening after brushing your teeth, on clean, dry teeth using The Smilist pro polishing toothbrush. A simple and effective step.

Conclusion: enjoy, but do it wisely

You don't have to give up summer pleasures to protect your smile. By adopting a few simple habits, by choosing natural products, and by respecting your mouth's natural rhythm, you can enjoy ice creams, fruits, and cocktails without guilt — or enamel damage.
