April prevention month: how to spot the early signs of cavities or gingivitis?

Published on April 16, 2025

April is an excellent time to take stock of your oral health. It's often in spring that we start planning health check-ups, getting back on track… and preparing for summer! Why not take the opportunity to prevent cavities and spot the early signs of gingivitis ?

Cavities: the signs you shouldn't ignore

Early-stage cavities are often silent. But certain signs should put you on alert:

  • A sensitivity to cold or sugar
  • A diffuse pain with no apparent cause
  • Brown or white spots on the teeth
  • A persistent bad breath

Even in the absence of pain, a cavity can develop and progress towards complications. Regular check-ups allow it to be caught in time.

Gingivitis: a common inflammation, but a reversible one

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums, often caused by inadequately removed dental plaque. It presents as:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing
  • A feeling of discomfort or tingling

When addressed promptly, gingivitis can be completely reversed. Left untreated, it risks progressing to periodontitis, which is a far more serious condition to treat.
